The Vandals, Soundwave Festival (23 February 2013)

The Vandals at Soundwave 2013

The first band of the day (well, after hearing a couple songs from Mindless Self Indulgence, who I knew nothing about) was The Vandals, one of the first punk bands I listened to back when I got into the genre in my teens. Early in the day, the moshpit was sparsely attended, which meant that it largely turned into a big, raucous circle pit – not too rough, since this is The Vandals after all. They put on a pleasant, if muted, set of pop-punk tunes, with “I Got An Ape Drape” and “My Girlfriend’s Dead” early highlights.

I was a little disappointed to find that their usual drummer, Josh Freese (who’s also played for Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and Guns ‘n’ Roses, amongst many others), wasn’t in attendance, replaced by Alkaline Trio’s drummer (who did a decent if unspectacular job).

The last song of the set was their (arguably superior to the original) cover of “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and guitarist Warren Fitzgerald, taking over vocal duties, took the lyrics to heart…

…wandering (and falling) into the crowd…
