The premiere of Girls’ sophomore season (arriving roughly the same time as its Golden Globes win) is smart to set most of its action at a hazy apartment bash, since the episode matches the meandering, feverish feel of a drunken, crowded party. It feels a touch rushed compared to the careful pacing of Season 1 – a good episode, but I would have liked a little longer to reflect on some events.
That said, there was a lot to like about it:
- Adam, who was my favourite part of Season 1, continues to feature heavily – as in the start of Season 1, he’s relegated to his apartment, but now he has a good reason.
- Shosanna is my least favourite character, but I liked her here; she was used sparingly and was genuinely funny each time – A good reminder of how the show is as much a comedy as anything.
- Elijah spent most of Season 1 as a (to borrow a Happy Endings phrase) “sitcom gay,” so his encounter with Marnie was an encouraging way to flesh out the character.
- Speaking of Marnie, starting the season with her getting fired is a good start; she’s most interesting when she’s challenged.
- Donald Glover!
