Director, Tim Story returns for another comedy-fueled ride-along with brothers “in-law” James (Ice Cube) and Ben (Kevin Hart). Right from the word go, we are reminded of the characters and their roles in the franchise – James, the tough-guy lead detective and Ben, the goofy sidekick seeking approval.
In Ride Along 2, we follow the pair of now detectives as they head to Florida in pursuit of a drug dealer, bringing them into contact with super-tech-geek, A.J. (Ken Jeong) and fellow detective, Maya (Olivia Munn), presented as a possible love interest for Cube’s character.
I went in with low expectations and they were met; the film was underwhelming with the most ‘laugh out loud’ moments already featured in the trailers. A car chase sequence that morphed into video game graphics was by far the standout scene of the film. Olivia Munn’s character was appreciated as a female detective that didn’t need “saving” by the male lead – unfortunately still a rarity in 2016.
Mix in a bit of noughties hip-hop, a selection of overused jokes and a ’90s P Diddy reference and you have yourself a stock-standard comedy that will give you a quick laugh for a night …but little else.
