Thanks to Madman Entertainment, ccpopculture has 3 DVDs of Nightcrawler to give away.
“Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. In his Golden Globe-nominated performance, Jake Gyllenhaal is Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling, where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by a career-oriented veteran of the bloodsport that is tabloid news, Nina, (Rene Russo), Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.”
Nightcrawler was one of the best films of last year; I gave it 4 stars in my review at the time and still regret that Jake Gyllenhaal missed out on a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars. Madman have given it a fantastic home entertainment release, which includes a full commentary from director/screenwriter Dan Gilroy, producer Tony Gilroy and editor John Gilroy. It’s an illuminating (if technical) commentary, which reveals one of the movie’s chief strengths – a portrayal of Lou Bloom that focused on “eliminating any of the classic moral labels” to provide an enigmatic and confronting character; a sociopath very much in the mould of flawed yet sympathetic characters like Travis Bickle. The DVD release also includes a making-of featurette titled If It Bleeds, It Leads and interviews with the main cast.

Jake seriously didn’t even get a mention at the Oscars? Wow, they don’t mean much to me, now even less. This was one of the best one man performances I have ever seen!!!
