For a show that just won a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy, it’s easy to forget just how funny Girls can be.
Well, until you watch “I Get Ideas,” which is filled to the brim with laugh-out-loud moments. Most of which involve Hannah (who was largely sidelined in the premiere) – whether she’s arguing with her (now-ex) boyfriend Sandy about how she “doesn’t see race” while dropping Missy Elliot lines, having Marnie diplomatically explain why she’s not suited for “pretty people work” or bickering about restraining orders with Adam outside her apartment.
When you’re laughing at Girls, you’re generally laughing at the expense of the characters (or occasionally at a cute chihuahua). But unlike many comedies, it’s also clear that there’s also a lot of sympathy for the characters.
This is apparent when Adam “breaks into” Hannah’s apartment – he’s crossed a significant line, and Hannah’s 911 almost-call isn’t unwarranted. But the show demonstrates its calibre by giving Adam that heartbreaking moment when he realises Hannah is serious about rejecting him (then cleverly shifts into a funny scene immediately afterwards). It’s this kind of intelligent (and funny) writing and respect for its characters that makes Girls such a great show.
So glad you like this show. I honestly think it is the best show on television right now. Accurate and comically vicious. Donald Glover cracked me up in this episode. “Oh, wow, wow, you need to go. No, like, you need to go.”
Thanks Alex, it is a great show – I really feel like Season 2 is much stronger than Season 1 already (which was excellent). And yeah, I really enjoyed that scene with Donald Glover …I hope that’s not his only appearance in this season!
