Problems

Sam Simmons’ new show, Problems, is Australia’s answer to Louie. Like Louie, Problems is a window into its creator’s psyche: meaning that the show is absurd, hilarious and fundamentally good-natured. It touches on Simmons’ love of “shitty trivia” and is weirdly obsessed with food (Episode one revolves around tacos while episode two features a sex scene of sorts in a suburban food court).

The show is somewhere between a sitcom and a sketch show, and feels like nothing else on television. Each episode follows Sam and his cat Mr Meowgi in a quest to solve the eponymous problem, with an almost traditional narrative structure. The rest of the show is more like a sketch show, with some recurring bits and a host of truly bizarre – and often hilarious – vignettes.

The recurring segments range from the uncomfortable, nonsensical humour of Warwick Simmons’ trivia, the relaxed sunset anecdotes of Morgan and Mooney to the domestic problems of a pair of moths living in Sam’s couch (the weakest part of the show thus far).

Problems manages to be weird, entertaining and funny without just being silly for the sake of it, and I’m optimistic it can maintain this balance and quality in future.
