Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop (feat. Wanz)

I’m definitely behind the bandwagon with this track – I’d assumed from the name of the artist and song that it was some weedy indie rock song. Not that I have anything against indie rock, but the genre’s feeling a touch tired nowadays.

I finally heard it on Triple J a few days ago (and pretty much every time I’ve listened to the station since) and it’s already my favourite pop song of the year. The intro is immediately catchy and different-sounding and kicks into the hook-laden chorus (“This is fucking awesome” – best singalong line of 2012? Yeah) before a half-minute even passes.

The song is witty in all the right ways. It’s not a comedy song, it’s not trying to make you laugh, but it is doing its damnedest to be entertaining. The line “Probably shoulda washed this/smells like R. Kelly’s sheets (pissssssssssssssssssss)” is where I was completely sold.

“Thrift Shop” is the perfect length, throwing in the ridiculous but great “I wear your granddad’s clothes/I look incredible” refrain and finishing the song when they probably could have tossed another chorus or two in without anyone complaining. It leaves you wanting more – in fact, I’m going to listen to it again.

    • Thanks for the comment – it’s very much an ear worm! A lot of people seem to be turned off the track after its boost in popularity but I still think it holds up..
