Expectations are a funny thing. Had I seen Pokémon Detective Pikachu, oh, six months ago – before the first trailer set the internet into a tizzy at the prospect that this film might actually be good – I would’ve have been pleasantly surprised.
Captain Marvel isn’t quite a dud, but it’s far from marvellous.
Greta feels like a dispatch straight from the early-‘90s – and I’m not complaining.
We watch Bond movies to be transported to glossy locations and marvel at beautiful people, not to trudge through underlit apartment buildings in the depths of winter.
This film adeptly sidesteps the obvious dangers of either explaining or empathising with Dahmer … which, unfortunately, leaves it without much of a purpose.
Despite In the Fade (effectively) manipulating an emotional response in its audience, it has nothing of substance behind its thin thrills.
There’s much to recommend The Miseducation of Cameron Post, but on the whole it feels too dramatically inert.
The Yellow Birds isn’t so much bad as bland: an unforgiveable sin in today’s crowded marketplace.
I love a lot about The Breaker Upperers.
Unfortunately, I don’t love the film itself.
